Staging area for trips into Rocky Mountain National Park,
Estes Park is a picturesque little tourist town. As with any
place that derives its primary income from tourist trade, the people
here aim to make visitors welcome. And there is little chance of
getting bored; there are interesting activities year-round.
You might choose to camp at one of the campgrounds near town,
or you can stay at a friendly little
bed and breakfast house. There are
dude ranches, resorts
and hotels of all classes.
You might time your visit to include the world-famous
Longs Peak Scottish/Irish Highland Festival (the weekend after Labor Day). If so,
be sure to stay through Sunday evening, to hear the Last Post played by all
of the Bagpipe Bands at once, it shakes the very cores of the mountains!
Or you may prefer one of the other events, such as Annual Music Festival,
4th of July Shootout, Scandanavian Festival, Catch the Glow Parade, Wool Market,
Rooftop Rodeo, or the Labor Day Crafts Show.
You don't need a special event to have fun in Estes though, there are
plenty of interesting shops and galleries in town, and just outside town the
mountains beckon for your hiking, camping, climbing, fishing, and general wilderness
appreciation and enjoyment. There are guided nature tours and horseback adventures
waiting your pleasure.
And don't neglect the so-called 'off' season, when skiing and snowboarding
call the adventuresome, and romantic cabins shelter folks who know how to get away from
it all. The snow-clad mountains are even more majestic and awesome than they seemed in
Summer, and anyone who has never seen this area in Winter really must come and witness
Nature's power and beauty.
