Transportation

Highways

Most people who come to Larimer County arrive by automobile. Insterstate 25 passes along the eastern edge of the county, connecting with Insterstate 80 at Cheyenne to the north, and Insterstate 76 and Interstate 70 to the south at Denver.

The main north-south two-lane highway is route 287 which goes north to Laramie and south to Denver, roughly parallel to Interstate 25 but further west and curving even farther to the west at the north end of the county. In Larimer County route 287 passes from Berthoud in the south to Loveland, Fort Collins, Livermore and Virginia Dale.

The main east-west highway is route 34, which enters the county on the east and passes through Loveland and up into the mountains to Estes Park, through Rocky Mountain National Park where it exits the county continuing westward.

Another highway passes through the mountains further north, state highway 14 connects with highway 287 on the east, then goes up to Pouder Park and Rustic, passing through Roosevelt National Forest most its route, until it passes out of the county on the west and continue on to Walden.

Of course there are thousands of local streets and smaller roads criss-crossing this huge county, see MapQuest for a more detailed view.

Airports

The main airport in Larimer county is the Fort Collins/Loveland Airport (FNL), operated jointly by those two cities. It is an FAA certified general aviation airport located on the high plains along the Interstate 25 corridor. The runway, which is 8500 feet long and 100 feet wide, is serviced with high intensity lighting and an instrument landing system. Allegiant Air provides commercial flights to and from this airport, through their hub in Las Vegas.

The nearest airport served by the major airlines is Denver International Airport, about 50 miles south of the Fort Collins/Loveland Airport.

There is also Fort Collins Downtown Airport (3V5), located about two miles northeast of downtown Fort Collins. It is a dusk to dawn public airport with two runways, each just over 4900 feet in length and 44 feet wide, and no tower.

Trains

Like so many places in America nowadays, Larimer County has train tracks but they only serve freight trains, there is no passenger service. The nearest Amtrak station is in Denver, which is served by the California Zephyr.

Within the city of Fort Collins, the Fort Collins Municipal Railway operates a trolley-train along West Mountain Avenue on weekend afternoons from May through September. It has single car, originally purchased by the city in 1919 and restored in the mid 1980s (the original city trolley system operated 1919 to 1951).

Bus Service

For travellers, Fort Collins is served by Greyhound and TNM&O from the station at 250 North Mason Street. Locally, bus service is provided within Fort Collins by TransFort, which also has service to and from Loveland. The city of Loveland is served by City of Loveland Transit (COLT).

Other Services

There are also numerous taxis, shuttle services, limo services and tourbuses serving the county. Contact a travel agent for details.
