Google
Google started out as a search engine, has gradually expanded to serve more and more functions, gradually broadening into a generalized web portal. They used to be tops in search, but lately their index seems to have shrunk rather than grown -- ok for basic search, but use other search engines when looking for anything obscure. Great resource for news and shopping, they still don't offer quite as many functions as Yahoo! Their free mail service (Gmail) is the best webmail you can find.

MSN - Microsoft Network
A general portal with free email (Hotmail), search, directory, news, sports, weather, etc. Mostly used by members subscribing to MSN Internet Access, this is immitation Yahoo.
