Search and Directory Sites
|
Google
Google was the premier search engine, but they are loosing their edge, and other search engines, such as Yahoo! return more relevant results.

ODP - Open Directory Project
Open Directory provides the means for the Internet to organize itself. Owned by Netscape (which is owned by AOL, owned by Time Warner) it is a volunteer powered directory of web sites. Also called DMOZ (directory mozilla). Doesn't always give you the most up-to-date results, but generally has non-advertising and non-partisan evaluations of sites (excepting the occasion biased editor that slips in and manages to skew their small portion of the directory). Offers search and directory listings.

MSN Search
This site by the all-powerful Microsoft used to rely on Google, but is now using its own search results and rating algorithm. Results tend to be slightly less relevant than Google (especially when you move down from the top few results) but they are improving and could catch up with Google eventually.

Alexa Web Search
Owned by Amazon and power by Google, Alexa oofers one enhancement on the Google results, in that they rank web sites by traffic they receive. Each site in a search results list has a little link next to it labeled 'site info' that will give you the traffic rank for that site, along with a list of similar sites.
